Sweet Corn Harvest Paves Fresh Path to Higher Farm Incomes in Dongyang

In Geshan Town, Dongyang, Zhejiang, a sprawling cornfield swayed gently in the breeze on September 14, where freshly picked sweet corn was being packed and sorted at the field's edge before heading out via cold-chain logistics.

"In the past, when I hauled corn to Yiwu's wholesale market, even slightly blemished ears could go unsold," said grower Xu Yunfei. Now, thanks to a partnership with a company that guarantees seeds, technical support, and purchase agreements, he has expanded his planting from just over 10 mu last year to 27 mu, boosting his annual income by nearly 50,000 yuan.

Xu's story reflects a broader shift rippling through Dongyang's sweet corn sector. In 2018, Si Daishan pivoted from garment trading to the corn business. When her first 20-mu trial plot yielded 40,000 ears, she found herself overwhelmed, lacking both sales channels and preservation know-how. She eventually turned to short videos showcasing freshly picked, raw-bite corn, and established Daxian Family Farm, building a "company plus farmers" model that delivers standardized services from seed supply and technical guidance to guaranteed minimum purchases.

"You can't blindly expand sweet corn acreage, sales must lead planting," Si cautioned. Today, she has diversified into planting bases at varying altitudes in Pan'an and Lishui, plus locations outside the province, using staggered planting schedules to secure year-round supply.

Shifts at the market end are also spurring innovation in breeding. In a 100-mu trial field in Paitang Natural Village, Weishan Town, over 50 seed industry experts and agronomists recently conducted on-site yield assessments. The "Hongcai Tiannuo 211" variety produced 1,006.3 kilograms of fresh ears per mu, with a marketable ear rate of 90.5%.

"After wheat and rapeseed harvests in mid-to-late May, central Zhejiang faces a 60-to-70-day fallow window," noted Lü Guihua, director of the Corn and Specialty Grain Research Institute at the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Under high temperatures, conventional sweet corn germination rates dip below 50%, but "Hongcai Tiannuo 211" was bred specifically as a heat-tolerant variety for this gap, potentially adding around 5,000 yuan in output value per mu.

Beyond breeding, each ear faces the hurdles of freshness and logistics. Sweet corn has a short post-harvest shelf life, requiring swift harvesting, pre-cooling, sorting, and transport during peak seasons. Dongyang leverages the Yangtze River Delta logistics network, deploying cold-chain distribution to shrink the journey from farm to table.

Building on these efforts, Dongyang continues to solidify its variety development, optimize cultivation methods, and expand market channels. The city has hosted the Yangtze River Delta Fresh Sweet Corn Conference for nine consecutive years, creating a vital platform where research institutes, growers, and market players converge to exchange ideas and forge connections.
