Verizon Secures Multi-Billion Dollar Fiber Supply Deal with Corning, Encompassing Over 80 Million Fiber Miles

US telecommunications giant Verizon has solidified a multi-year supply agreement with Corning, securing the delivery of more than 80 million fiber miles of high-density fiber and connectivity solutions between 2027 and 2032. The contract value has been disclosed only as being in the billions of dollars, with the products slated to support fixed broadband expansion, mobile network backhaul, and AI data center interconnections.

Under the terms of the agreement, Corning will commence deliveries of fiber and connectivity products to Verizon in 2027, with the supply period stretching through 2032. Neither company has revealed the exact contract value, annual purchase volumes, pricing, or minimum purchase commitments. The "over 80 million miles" figure refers to the total fiber length, which does not directly equate to Verizon constructing 80 million miles of new network routes. A single optical cable typically contains multiple fibers, sometimes hundreds, and industry statistics for fiber miles aggregate the length of each individual fiber, meaning the actual route mileage will be significantly lower than the headline number.

The supply relationship between Verizon and Corning spans approximately three decades. In 2017, the pair entered into a three-year agreement with a minimum purchase value of $1.05 billion, allowing Corning to supply up to 12.4 million fiber miles annually from 2018 through 2020. The new contract expands both the execution timeline and total fiber volume, yet direct comparisons between the two deals are complicated by incomplete disclosure of pricing structures and purchasing terms.

One Network Serving Broadband, Mobile, and Data Center Connectivity

Verizon intends to deploy the fiber for broadband access targeting homes and businesses, while also connecting mobile base stations, enterprise data centers, and residential communities. The company is advancing a unified high-capacity network architecture for both fixed broadband and mobile services, aiming to extend its fiber broadband footprint to between 40 million and 50 million customer locations. Another application involves constructing long-haul and metropolitan backbone routes linking major data centers.

Kyle Malady, CEO of Verizon Business, stated that the company's AI Connect strategy will place high-density optical cables along major long-distance corridors, delivering high-bandwidth, low-latency data center connectivity for hyperscale cloud providers. The supply agreement secures critical materials for Verizon's network expansion well in advance, while also providing Corning with an order base to plan its US fiber manufacturing capacity. Mike O'Day, Senior Vice President of Corning's Optical Communications business, identified generative AI infrastructure and broadband network expansion as key demand drivers for the company's fiber operations.

US Data Centers Drive Rising Fiber Demand

Research from the Fiber Broadband Association and RVA Market Research projects that US fiber route mileage may need to grow from approximately 95,000 miles to 187,000 miles by 2029 to support AI and data center expansion. During the same period, total fiber length could increase from 159 million miles to 373 million miles. These figures represent industry projections, with actual demand depending on data center construction timelines, network design choices, and fiber density per cable.

Following the announcement, Corning's share price climbed nearly 9% in September 8 trading, while Verizon's stock saw minimal movement. Optical communications equipment makers including Ciena, Coherent, and Lumentum also posted gains that day. The timing of the stock movements coincided with the deal's disclosure, though broader market factors may have also influenced these equities.
