Guangxi's Zhongshan County: Technology-Driven Spring Management Transforms Farming from Weather-Dependent to Skill-Based

In the spring scenery of Zhongshan County, Guangxi, vast tobacco fields are covered with silver mulch film, while tender green tobacco seedlings stretch their leaves in the spring rain, taking root in the soil. Unlike previous years, field management no longer relies solely on backbreaking labor but is increasingly marked by technology-enabled intelligence—yellow sticky boards and pheromone traps are strategically placed, and tobacco technicians use handheld devices to provide precise guidance. A modern agricultural landscape, painted with technology and refined management, is gradually unfolding.

"After transplanting tobacco seedlings, inspecting and replacing weak plants is the top priority," explained a tobacco technician crouching between the ridges in Shandu Village, Huilong Town, as they instructed farmers on replacing frail seedlings and leveling planting holes. "Only by doing this step thoroughly can the seedlings recover quickly and grow uniformly later." As a critical phase in tobacco production, field management directly determines leaf quality. Zhongshan Tobacco has moved its "field classroom" directly to the ridges, with technicians acting as "field doctors," comparing growth rates, monitoring soil moisture, and predicting pest risks on-site.

"For weak-growing seedlings, we demonstrate how to apply 'preferential fertilizer' to ensure balanced growth across the entire field," the technician added. "In the past, we relied on experience; now, we depend on technology," said Liao Wenzhi, a local tobacco farmer. "The technicians have given us a 'manual'—every step has a standard. The tobacco we grow now is easier to cure, and the cured leaves are golden and rich in oil. That’s high-quality tobacco!"

Behind this precise management lies a combination of scientific fertilization and water-nutrient regulation. Zhongshan Tobacco adheres to the principle of "observing the weather, soil, and seedlings" to tailor nutrition plans for each plant: sandy soil, which retains less fertilizer, receives lighter but more frequent applications, while clay soil, with better retention, gets appropriately reduced doses. Nitrogen application strictly follows the rule of "plenty in youth, scarcity in maturity, fading as leaves develop," preventing delayed ripening.

"Water and nutrient management is like preparing a balanced diet—it’s not just about quantity but quality," a technician explained in the field. "During the root extension stage, maintaining soil moisture at 65% is ideal for root growth. We also clear drainage ditches to prevent waterlogging from spring rains, which can cause disease."

Through dynamic adjustments—from nurturing weak seedlings after transplanting to promoting deep roots and later controlling fertilizer to prevent overgrowth—technicians monitor growth全程, ensuring uniform development and high quality.

Green pest control serves as Zhongshan’s "ecological code" for enhancing tobacco quality. In Mingjia Village, Yantang Town, bright yellow sticky boards stand out under the sun. "These insects are naturally attracted to yellow—they trap themselves," said Tan Yiping, an agronomy supervisor, while demonstrating installation. "We place these boards along the ridges like rows of 'yellow guardians.'" For migratory pests like tobacco budworms and Spodoptera litura, pheromone traps are deployed alongside, using physico-chemical methods to control pests at the source.

"In the past, pesticide use was guesswork; now, with these 'guardians,' we use less chemicals, and the tobacco quality is better," said Lei Lifei, an experienced farmer from Fengxiang Town, smiling as he observed the neatly arranged traps.

Zhongshan Tobacco strictly implements a "prevention-first, integrated control" plant protection strategy, promoting yellow boards and pheromone traps widely. Early deployment post-transplanting helps build a reliable green shield for the fields, giving farmers peace of mind and ensuring higher leaf quality.

Transitioning from "relying on experience" to "depending on technology," and from "extensive management" to "precision care," Zhongshan Tobacco has centered on technological empowerment in recent years, accelerating the modernization and smart transformation of tobacco production. The dual approach of "field classrooms" and "green defenses" has made farming more efficient and profitable for growers.

"Before, we depended on the weather; now, we farm with technology, which feels much more secure," said Dong Liangting, a farmer from Huilong Town, who calculated the benefits: "Irrigating and fertilizing one mu of land used to take two or three people half a day. With drip irrigation, one person can manage dozens of mu. Labor costs are down, fertilizer expenses are saved, and tobacco quality has improved, earning us hundreds more per mu."

As spring management progresses, technology and ecology are quietly reshaping traditional agriculture in Zhongshan’s tobacco fields. From precision fertilization to green pest control, and from field training to smart management, each technological application injects new vitality into farmer incomes and rural industry revitalization. As Li Feng, a Zhongshan Tobacco official, stated, "We aim for every tobacco leaf to carry a 'green code,' boosting farmers’ earnings and enhancing rural ecology."

On this promising land, Zhongshan’s journey of turning "green" into "gold" is not only a path of industrial upgrading but also a road toward ecological beauty, industrial prosperity, and common wealth in rural revitalization.
