OpenAI's ChatGPT Nears 1 Billion Weekly Active Users

According to internal disclosures from OpenAI, the company's chatbot is close to surpassing 1 billion weekly active users. This milestone was originally a target the enterprise planned to achieve by the end of last year. Although it is now arriving roughly seven months later than originally anticipated, ChatGPT has amassed such a vast user base in less than four years since its launch. Even if not the fastest-growing, it ranks among the quickest-growing products in internet applications.

A company spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. Multiple factors are contributing to the slowdown in ChatGPT's user growth. On one hand, the rise of Google's Gemini artificial intelligence is a key factor, as the model is being deeply integrated into Google's web search engine, which already serves billions of users. On the other hand, when OpenAI launched GPT-5 last autumn, growth in weekly active users began to decline. The development of this model was fraught with challenges, and it faced significant criticism from users after its release.

Furthermore, data from several research firms indicates that since then, Anthropic's Claude chatbot has also captured a portion of the chatbot market share.
