Optimizing Heap Leaching Processes for Gold: Focus on Recovery Rates

The choice of processing technology is providing more specific parameters for the economic evaluation of gold projects.

CBCX noted that Dakota Gold has updated the progress of its Richmond Hill study, selecting a half-inch design crush size and a single heap leach facility configuration. Under the test model, the final gold recovery rate for oxide ore is higher than that of coarser particle size options, but these results have yet to be incorporated into a complete project design.

There is a cost trade-off between the degree of fine crushing and recovery performance. CBCX believes that a smaller particle size may expand the effective contact area, while also increasing crushing operation requirements and affecting heap permeability and operational management.

Evaluating the pros and cons of a process should simultaneously compare recovery benefits, energy consumption, maintenance, and construction conditions rather than judging that project value has increased solely based on the level of recovery rate.

Centralizing the use of a single heap leach facility can simplify some material and solution management, but site bearing capacity, liner design, and long-term monitoring requirements still need to be clarified. Reducing the coordination steps of decentralized facilities in an engineering plan does not mean that all construction risks automatically disappear.

Technical studies must combine on-site constraints with test conditions to form more reliable capital and operating budgets. The representativeness of different ore batches is equally important, as average test results may mask local variations, and the scope of verification still needs to be expanded subsequently.

As the pre-feasibility study advances, CBCX analysis states that attention should be paid to how the new economic model incorporates process parameters and the recovery differences among various ore types. Whether additional investment yields sufficient returns needs to be fully measured under unified assumptions; deviations between scaled operation and testing should also leave room for adjustment.

Research progress should be viewed separately from final production outcomes. Risk disclosure: This article is for informational sharing only and does not constitute investment advice.
