Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Sees Explosive Sales, Triggering Supply Strains on Core Components

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 foldable smartphone is enjoying a robust sales performance, with its novel form factor display gaining strong consumer approval. As demand for the device surges, the supply chain for its physical components is beginning to feel the pressure.

According to industry sources, the supply of the Display Driver IC (DDI) for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has become notably tight. The DDI for this device is designed by Samsung Electronics' System LSI division and manufactured by United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) using its 22nm process technology.

One industry insider stated that UMC's 22nm production line is operating at its maximum capacity. They noted that while Samsung Electronics had requested UMC to utilize its "Super Hot Run" service for the DDI production to meet the unexpected demand, the manufacturer indicated that fulfilling such a request would be extremely challenging given current constraints.

For context, wafer processing speeds in the semiconductor industry are typically categorized as "Normal Run," "Hot Run," and "Super Hot Run," with each level representing a faster turnaround time than the last.

Another source revealed that due to the current shortage of DDI materials, Samsung Electronics is planning to allocate materials originally reserved for next year's production into immediate manufacturing. The three different foldable phone models under Samsung's umbrella each use distinct DDI specifications, which is a contributing factor to the supply bottleneck. Unlike standardized components such as DRAM or LPDDR memory, the production capacity for these specialized chips is inherently constrained by their manufacturing speed.
