Weibo recently released its Hot Search Report for the first quarter of 2026. The report indicates that from January to March this year, the proportion of entertainment-related topics on Weibo's main hot search list decreased by 23% year-on-year, marking a significant decline. In contrast, the share of niche or vertical topics rose to 38%, representing a 27% increase compared to the same period last year. Social issues and entertainment topics each accounted for 31%, resulting in a more balanced content structure among the three categories.

This shift stems from Weibo's ongoing efforts to refine its hot search ranking mechanism. Building upon its existing algorithm, the platform has introduced three new dimensions: "public attention," "domain-specific attention," and "content quality." These additions form a six-dimensional evaluation system, providing greater exposure for topics in specialized fields such as technology, sports, and finance. Additionally, the criteria for topics to enter or exit the hot search list have become more transparent, allowing users to view the specific performance of trending topics across these various dimensions.

In terms of content governance, during the first quarter, the platform removed an average of 40 "misleading" hot search entries daily and reduced the exposure of repetitive content by an average of 80 entries per day. When public engagement with a topic continues to decline, its ranking is dynamically adjusted downward to curb malicious marketing and low-quality traffic. Data shows that these governance measures are beginning to yield results. User consumption time on the hot search page increased by 5% year-on-year, while interaction volume grew by 6%.

The report further reveals that over 42% of users have developed the habit of turning to hot search as their primary source for learning about breaking news. Hot search topics related to statements from involved parties saw a growth rate of 13%, with more key individuals choosing Weibo as their first platform for public statements, thereby driving substantive progress in related events.
