South Korean Media: Delivery Times for Key Semiconductor Equipment Components Have "More Than Doubled"

Supply chain bottlenecks are emerging at the critical component level of the semiconductor industry, driven by surging demand linked to artificial intelligence. Reports from South Korean industry sources indicate that lead times for essential parts used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment have widely extended to over double their previous duration. Some critical components sourced from Japan now require wait times of up to 40 months, a delay that threatens the production schedules of equipment makers and could impact capital expenditure plans at major chip manufacturers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

According to industry insiders cited by South Korea's Electronic Times on September 16, multiple domestic semiconductor equipment companies are reporting increasing difficulty in procuring components. An executive from Company A, a deposition equipment maker, noted that lead times for related parts have stretched from four months previously to ten months now. Company B, a laser processing equipment manufacturer, faces an even more extreme situation, with wait times for essential Japanese-made components extending to 40 months, a delay that cannot be shortened even with premium pricing.

Industry experts caution that the combined pressure of component shortages and delayed equipment deliveries significantly raises the likelihood of postponements in global semiconductor production infrastructure investments. Planned construction projects, including Samsung Electronics' Pyeongtaek facility and SK Hynix's Yongin campus, are both flagged as potentially affected.

Soaring Demand Overwhelms Supply Chain

The immediate catalyst for this component shortage is the explosive growth in demand triggered by the AI wave. As shipments of AI semiconductors and memory chips climb sharply, the need for semiconductor manufacturing equipment has expanded rapidly. However, suppliers of core components, such as modules, that these machines rely on did not pre-emptively increase their production capacity, creating a supply-demand gap.

One industry insider stated directly, "Even if component manufacturers were to begin expanding production now, they could not meet current demand." He also pointed out that uncertainty over when the AI-driven semiconductor supercycle might end is causing component suppliers to adopt a wait-and-see approach toward large-scale capacity investments. This is especially pronounced in Japan's component industry, a vital pillar for semiconductor equipment manufacturing, where suppliers have historically been conservative with capacity investments, a trait that is now magnified under the current supply strain.

Company C, a packaging equipment manufacturer, has established a domestic component supply chain but has not been immune to the issues. An executive there said domestic sourcing is performing better than overseas procurement, yet delivery times remain about 50% longer than normal—packaging equipment components that used to arrive in four months now take over six months.

Equipment Delivery Delays Cascade Downstream

The pressure from component shortages is now cascading down the supply chain to the equipment delivery stage. It is reported that semiconductor manufacturers are currently experiencing wait times for equipment that are double the usual duration, with global chipmakers in the midst of large capital expenditure cycles feeling the most significant impact.

A semiconductor equipment industry source predicted, "The combination of delayed equipment deliveries and component supply shortages has significantly raised the possibility of postponements in global semiconductor production infrastructure investment," specifically naming Samsung Electronics' Pyeongtaek project and SK Hynix's Yongin project as being affected.

This situation implies that domestic expansion plans in South Korea, previously viewed as a major theme in AI infrastructure investment, are now facing substantial headwinds originating from supply chain constraints.
