The University Health system in San Antonio announced on Monday a strategic collaboration with Royal Philips NV (PHG) to comprehensively modernize and standardize its in-patient monitoring systems using Philips' enterprise-level Monitoring-as-a-Service model. In response to ongoing growth in patient volumes, this partnership aims to establish a scalable monitoring platform that spans the entire hospital network, supporting clinical workflows, optimizing alarm management, and enabling data-driven healthcare decisions.
The core component of this deployment will be the Philips Central Monitoring Unit. This unit functions as a centralized, scalable hub for remote telemetry monitoring, designed to integrate seamlessly with various hospital systems. By replacing traditional fragmented manual processes, it utilizes advanced alarm management and streamlined communication to help filter non-essential alerts, reduce response times, and enhance collaboration among clinical teams.
The Philips monitoring platform will be implemented across intensive care units, operating rooms, interventional suites, and various specialty service areas. The deployment will feature IntelliVue MX450, MX550, and MX750 bedside monitors, paired with X3 transport monitors and MX40 wearable devices, ensuring continuous patient monitoring during intra-facility transfers. At the heart of the platform is the Patient Information Center, which unifies monitoring data, clinical decision support tools, early warning scores, and advanced algorithms to provide clinicians with a comprehensive view of each patient's status, facilitating timely intervention.
Furthermore, the platform includes Alarm Insight Manager and Clinical Insight Manager tools to help teams optimize alarm performance and extract actionable insights from patient data. Bill Phillips, Chief Operating Officer of University Health, stated that migrating to this standardized enterprise platform will provide the team with continuous, actionable clinical insights, laying a foundation for improved alarm management, data analysis, and future innovation. Julia Strandberg, Head of Connected Care at Philips, noted that healthcare providers are increasingly seeking long-term partnerships that go beyond simple equipment replacement, and that Philips will use this model to provide University Health with ongoing innovation support while alleviating the burden of technology lifecycle management.
