Bitcoin Holds Firm Above $78K, Concludes August With a 24% Monthly Surge

During the Asian trading session on September 1st, Bitcoin maintained its position above the $78,400 mark, oscillating within a narrow 24-hour band between $77,200 and $79,200. The leading cryptocurrency registered a 24% gain over August, marking its most robust monthly performance since November 2024.

Among major altcoins, HYPE emerged as the sole gainer, climbing roughly 4% to hover near the $84 level. In contrast, Ethereum and Solana each retreated about 1%, trading near $2,440 and $104 respectively. Ripple consolidated just below the $1.40 threshold, while BNB changed hands around $693. Meanwhile, TRON and Dogecoin experienced declines of approximately 2%.

Shifting to the macroeconomic front, geopolitical tensions propelled oil prices upward, with the US conducting military operations near the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend. Brent crude advanced nearly 1% to hit $91 per barrel. This energy price surge filtered into the rates market, pushing the yield on the US 10-year Treasury to 4.78%. Consequently, market-implied odds for a Federal Reserve rate hike at its September 16th meeting have climbed to roughly 64%, a significant jump from the 36% probability seen before Chairman Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole. This environment weighed on gold, which slipped to around $4,435 an ounce, still concluding August with a 10% monthly advance.

Market analysts suggest that Bitcoin's ability to stabilize near $78,000 following a 23% rally carries more significant signals than the surge itself. Open interest in perpetual futures has fallen to its lowest level since May, and demand for US spot Bitcoin ETFs last week was the strongest since October 2025. This indicates that the August move was fueled by spot buying, with an absence of crowded leveraged long positions that might otherwise need to be unwound.

However, capital flows have started to show a shift. Data from trading firm Wintermute reveals that after nine consecutive days of net inflows totaling $924 million, Bitcoin ETFs recorded a $202 million outflow on Friday, putting an end to the streak. Since that point, attempts to break through the $82,000 resistance level have repeatedly failed. Jasper Demel, a Wintermute OTC trader, noted that the market is tense but lacks short-term directional conviction.

Looking ahead, Friday's release of the August nonfarm payrolls report represents the final significant labor market data point before the September FOMC meeting. With rate hike probabilities already near the two-thirds mark, a robust jobs report could send yields higher, potentially prompting Bitcoin to retest its overnight low of $77,200.
