In South Korea, the KOSPI composite index opened sharply lower, dropping 3.1% to hit 6,625.47 points.
The selloff was particularly pronounced among heavyweight tech names, with Samsung Electronics shares sliding 3% and SK Hynix also losing 3% in early trading.
