Malaysia's chip industry leader has raised the country's full-year forecast for electronics and electrical (E&E) product exports, now expecting the figure to surpass RM900 billion (approximately US$223 billion). The upward revision is driven by stronger-than-anticipated demand stemming from the global artificial intelligence (AI) boom, which has outpaced earlier projections.

In the second quarter of this year, Wong Siew Hai, chairman of the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association, had initially predicted exports would exceed RM800 billion. However, recent data shows that E&E product exports have already climbed from RM601 billion in 2025 to RM711 billion, reflecting a sharp acceleration in growth momentum.

According to Wong, Malaysia's technology product exports surged 44% in the first seven months of 2026, reaching approximately RM564 billion and accounting for nearly 48% of the nation's total export value. Semiconductors alone constitute close to three-quarters of that category's total, underscoring the sector's dominant role in the country's trade performance.

"Given the current trajectory, exports are highly likely to break through RM900 billion this year," Wong said in an interview on Friday, noting that AI infrastructure is being aggressively built out across all levels of the supply chain. With a 27-year career at Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC) behind him, Wong's outlook carries significant weight in the industry.

The convergence of the AI boom and ongoing shifts in global supply chain dynamics is fueling the continued rise of Malaysia's E&E exports. Robust demand for semiconductors, servers, and data center equipment has generated a substantial influx of orders for the country's chip sector, while numerous companies are simultaneously expanding their production footprints within Malaysia. These investments are not only enhancing the nation's capacity in assembly, testing, and packaging but also propelling its industry further up the semiconductor value chain into higher-end segments.
