Windows Update Causes Reset and Recovery Failures: Microsoft Fixes Bug in One Day!

Microsoft recently released its Windows Patch Tuesday updates, but subsequently confirmed that attempting to reset or restore devices after installing the updates could fail. The good news is that Microsoft released a fix patch in just one day.

Microsoft stated that some Windows users may experience failures when attempting to reset or restore their devices after installing the August 2025 Windows security update (KB5063709). This issue can be triggered through various methods, including "System > Recovery > Reset this PC," "System > Recovery > Troubleshoot with Windows Update," and even RemoteWipe CSP, all of which would fail.

Fortunately, Microsoft quickly released an out-of-band update to address this issue. The following is the list of fix updates released by Microsoft:

Windows 11 23H2 and 22H2 - KB5066189 Windows 10 22H2 - KB5066188 Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 - KB5066188 Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 - KB5066187

Microsoft indicated that these updates are cumulative, meaning users can directly apply these fixes without needing to install previous updates. Users can manually check for and install these updates through Windows Update.
