2025's Tech Industry Winners: Alphabet, Elon Musk, and ByteDance

As the year draws to a close, it's natural to reflect on the standout developments of 2025—a year marked by surprising turnarounds and strategic victories in the tech sector. Leading the pack is Alphabet (GOOGL), which not only emerged unscathed from antitrust litigation over its search engine dominance but also made significant strides in artificial intelligence (AI).

The pivotal moment came when Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Alphabet needed only to comply with relatively lenient antitrust remedies, citing the rise of AI chatbots like ChatGPT as a key factor in his decision. Ironically, what was once perceived as a threat to Alphabet's search supremacy ultimately worked in its favor. With the legal cloud lifted, Alphabet aggressively expanded its Gemini AI model across platforms, including integrating it into Chrome. The November launch of Gemini 3 further solidified its AI prowess, driving user adoption and propelling its stock to a 62% annual gain—the highest among major tech firms.

In contrast, Meta (META) struggled in the AI race. Delays and lukewarm reception for its Llama 4 model prompted CEO Mark Zuckerberg to overhaul its AI research team and pledge heavier investments for 2026. Meta’s shares rose just 12.5% this year, a far cry from its mid-year highs. Meanwhile, OpenAI faced its own challenges, underscoring that the AI industry remains fluid, with no clear winners yet.

Elon Musk claimed another victory when the Delaware Supreme Court upheld Tesla’s (TSLA) 2018 compensation package, netting him $139 billion based on Tesla’s $481.20 closing price.

ByteDance, TikTok’s parent, navigated U.S. regulatory pressures masterfully. Instead of a forced sale, TikTok restructured its U.S. data security unit into a joint venture controlled by American investors and Abu Dhabi’s MGX, while retaining core revenue streams like e-commerce and ads under ByteDance. The $14 billion JV valuation pales next to TikTok’s estimated worth, leaving skeptics to question if hardliners will accept this outcome. For now, ByteDance’s leadership is celebrating a year of deft maneuvering and preserved control.
