On July 7, iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) fell 6.64% in pre-market trading, trading at approximately $183.31/share, with turnover of $27.00 million.

The decline was driven by a severe sell-off in the Korean stock market. The KOSPI index plunged over 8% on the day, prompting the Korea Exchange to activate circuit breakers twice: first suspending program trading for 5 minutes after KOSPI 200 futures fell 5%, then halting all trading for 20 minutes after the index breached the 8% threshold triggering a Level 2 circuit breaker.

Samsung Electronics released preliminary Q2 results showing operating profit of 89.4 trillion KRW, surging 1,810% year-over-year and exceeding market estimates of 84.2 trillion KRW. However, the stock exhibited a classic sell-the-news pattern, falling over 7% intraday. Having rallied more than 158% over the prior 18 months, the beat was considered fully priced in. SK Hynix also declined sharply amid broader semiconductor sector weakness. Korean regulators have recently warned that single-stock leveraged ETFs tied to Samsung and SK Hynix are amplifying market volatility.

The fund generally invests at least 80% of its assets in the component securities of the MSCI Korea Index, a free float-adjusted market capitalization-weighted index designed to measure large- and mid-cap equity performance in Korea.
