When Will China's Smart Driving Catch Up with Tesla FSD? LEAPMOTOR CEO: It's Not Comparable

At the 2026 LEAPMOTOR Technology Day press conference held this morning, the company's founder, chairman, and CEO, Zhu Jiangming, along with senior executives including Cao Li, Zhou Hongtao, Wu Cun, and Song Yining, engaged with the media on a range of forward-looking topics. During the event, LEAPMOTOR unveiled its proprietary world-model-assisted autonomous driving system, marking a significant milestone in its smart driving roadmap.

When questioned about when the company's technology would catch up with Tesla Motors' FSD (Full Self-Driving), Zhu responded that a direct comparison is not feasible. He explained that Chinese vehicles cannot operate in the U.S. market, and Tesla's FSD has yet to be deployed in China, which fundamentally makes any side-by-side benchmark impossible.

"Elon Musk can say whatever he wants and claim whatever capabilities he likes, because there's no basis for comparison," Zhu noted. However, he emphasized that China presents the most challenging driving conditions globally, with a far greater density of delivery riders than the U.S., creating entirely different road scenarios. In this complex environment, Chinese automotive smart-driving teams are working diligently and improving rapidly. He predicted that the future could see systems requiring no human intervention for a week or even two weeks, gradually inching ever closer to true, fully autonomous driving.
