Beijing's Pinggu District to Establish Green Delivery System for Direct Urban Transport

Residents in Beijing may soon receive their packages faster as Pinggu District collaborates with Shoufa Group to build a green delivery system, enabling direct transportation of goods from the Pinggu logistics hub to urban areas.

On November 12, observations were made at Cainiao's directly operated Beijing Pinggu supermarket warehouse in Mafang Town, Pinggu District. The day after Double 11, the warehouse was bustling with forklifts moving along designated routes while staff worked tirelessly to sort, dispatch, and replenish goods. Shelves were neatly stacked with categorized packages.

"This warehouse exclusively serves Alibaba's Tmall Supermarket for the Beijing market, storing around 20,000 types of products. Except for flammable or refrigerated items, most orders placed by Beijing residents on Tmall Supermarket are shipped from here," explained Gao Xueliang, safety manager at Cainiao's Pinggu warehouse. However, the warehouse does not directly ship to consumers; instead, goods are first sent to Shunyi's sub-warehouse before final delivery.

Gao noted that this year's Double 11 shopping peak was similar to last year's. To handle the surge, the warehouse increased staffing and integrated technology to improve efficiency. For instance, workers used handheld scanning devices to verify correct package placement—misplaced items trigger alerts.

Zhang Jiao, deputy mayor of Mafang Town, stated that Pinggu District is positioning itself as a key logistics hub for the capital. Since last year, the district has focused on building a modern logistics network centered on multimodal transport (road-rail-sea-air), consolidating domestic and international goods at the Pinggu logistics hub before distributing them via a green urban delivery system.

To enhance last-mile efficiency, Pinggu plans to establish rapid transit warehouses in areas like Liuliqiao and Zhaogongkou. Goods will undergo secondary sorting at these hubs before precise delivery to residents. "The goal is to shorten transport distances, improve logistics efficiency, and reduce costs," Zhang said.

Among the planned transit warehouses, Zhaogongkou's facility is set to open by December, while Liuliqiao's will launch next year, initially supporting road transport needs.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Pinggu is accelerating the integration of agriculture and modern logistics, aiming to develop Beijing's largest logistics storage cluster and establish a national land-port logistics hub. By year-end, Mafang Town will complete 3.1 million square meters of high-standard warehouses—over half of Beijing's current total—advancing a "big agriculture–big food–big logistics" industrial framework.
