The China-Laos 500kV grid interconnection project was officially put into operation on April 20, 2026.
On the day it began operating, photovoltaic power from a clean energy base in northern Laos was delivered to Yunnan through this cross-border channel, marking the first time an overseas new energy project has been connected to China's electricity market.
As cooperation continued to deepen, on August 6, hydropower from Laos was transmitted via the project to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, signaling the growing two-way power mutual-support capacity between China and Laos and a new level of optimized cross-regional clean energy allocation.
The cumulative electricity transmitted through the China-Laos 500kV grid interconnection project has exceeded 1 billion kWh, an important milestone in the pragmatic China-Laos energy cooperation since the project began operating and a vivid example of the two countries jointly building the Green Silk Road.
Next, the two sides will continue to deepen all-round, in-depth cooperation on cross-border electricity, optimize joint grid dispatch, multinational operation and maintenance, market-based electricity trading and emergency support mechanisms, fully unlock the transmission potential of the cross-border interconnection channel, steadily expand the scale of green power transmission, broaden markets for clean energy consumption, and create an energy cooperation model for building a closer Lancang-Mekong community with a shared future.
