Hyundai Teams Up With Waymo, Banking on Robotaxis as EV Demand Tapers Off

Hyundai Motor is positioning autonomous taxi operators as a vital new source of demand for its electric vehicles, setting a target to produce "tens of thousands" of Ioniq 5 Robotaxis for Alphabet's (GOOGL.US) Waymo division. Chief Executive José Muñoz unveiled this production goal during an event in San Jose, California, last Thursday, marking the first time the company has revealed expected vehicle volumes since the partnership was announced in 2024.

The robotaxis will roll off the line at Hyundai's manufacturing hub near Savannah, Georgia, with commercial deliveries slated to kick off in the fourth quarter, following an initial testing phase. For investors, these autonomous fleet orders offer a way for Hyundai to keep its U.S. plant running at full tilt, even as consumer EV sales stateside have fallen short of earlier industry projections.

Fleet-scale commitments also deliver a more predictable volume pipeline compared with retail demand, though the upside hinges on whether Waymo and other self-driving firms can expand their services on schedule. Automakers have pulled back on EV investment amid slowing sales growth and shifting U.S. incentive and emissions policies. Hyundai's countermove involves retooling its Georgia facility to build more hybrids while scouting additional commercial buyers for its electric lineup.

Muñoz noted that the robotaxi manufacturing arm has already turned profitable and is evolving into a standalone business. He added that other autonomous vehicle companies have shown interest, potentially allowing Hyundai to diversify beyond Waymo. The Ioniq 5 vehicles will arrive pre-fitted with modifications required for Waymo's sixth-generation autonomous driving system—a factory-integrated approach that simplifies deployment compared with retrofitting vehicles after assembly.

Waymo currently operates or prepares to launch roughly 4,000 vehicles across 14 U.S. cities. As autonomous ride-hailing firms scale up their EV orders, that expansion positions the Alphabet subsidiary as a potentially significant fleet customer for automakers. Rivian (RIVN.US), Lucid (LCID.US), and Stellantis (STLA.US) have also announced vehicle supply deals with Uber (UBER.US) or other autonomous mobility partners, underscoring that robotaxis are emerging as a meaningful outlet for EV capacity—albeit one still in its early stages.
