SoftBank's subsidiary, SB Energy, is collaborating with OpenAI to assist in the development of OpenAI's artificial intelligence infrastructure platform, Stargate. As part of this collaboration, both OpenAI and SoftBank will invest $500 million each into SB Energy. The owner of ChatGPT, OpenAI, has also selected SB Energy to construct and operate its previously announced 1.2-gigawatt data center in Milam County, Texas. OpenAI stated that the project is expected to create thousands of construction jobs. As part of the agreement, OpenAI, SoftBank, and SB Energy have established a priority partnership to develop a new model for data center construction. SB Energy has also secured $800 million in redeemable preferred equity from Ares to support its growth. SB Energy is currently developing several gigawatt-scale data center campuses, which are expected to begin operations starting this year.
