At the Arm Everywhere China annual conference held in Shanghai on September 8, Arm officially launched its second-generation mobile terminal compute subsystem, CSS for Mobile 2. Among the many updates in this new platform, the most significant change is happening on the GPU side.

For the first time, Arm has integrated a dedicated neural network accelerator directly into its Mali GPU. The newly released Mali G2-Ultra NX enables certain neural graphics workloads to be processed entirely within the GPU itself, eliminating the need for external processing units. This marks a fundamental shift in how mobile graphics processing is approached.

Arm is not alone in this direction. On September 2, Qualcomm unveiled its Adreno Neural Fusion technology, introducing dedicated Matrix Cores for AI computation into its next-generation Adreno GPU. The fact that both Qualcomm and Arm have moved to embed specialized neural computing power inside their GPUs reflects an evolving competitive landscape in mobile graphics.

Historically, AI computations have been handled primarily by the separate NPU within the SoC, while the GPU focused purely on graphics rendering. However, as technologies such as ray tracing, AI super resolution, and frame generation begin entering mobile games, AI is now directly integrated into the graphics processing pipeline itself. The Mali G2-Ultra NX represents Arm's direct response to this transformation.

The new GPU supports three categories of neural graphics technology: NSS for neural super sampling, NFRU for AI-generated intermediate frames to boost frame rates, and NSSD which combines super sampling with denoising for more complex ray-traced scenes. According to Arm, the Mali G2-Ultra NX can deliver up to 4x improvement in performance per watt under neural graphics workloads.

Traditional graphics performance has also seen notable gains. Arm's data indicates that the new GPU delivers up to 14% performance improvement in non-AI game content. When combined with neural graphics technologies like NFRU, the platform can support sustained mobile gaming experiences at up to 120FPS. This represents a new computational economics at play, as smartphones have limited power dissipation and thermal headroom, making it impractical for GPUs to scale traditional compute indefinitely.

By leveraging neural networks to reconstruct parts of each frame and generate intermediate frames, less traditional compute is required to achieve higher image quality and frame rates than rendering every frame completely. However, the ultimate adoption will depend on whether game engine developers and other ecosystem players are willing to integrate this technology, and Arm has already begun building out this crucial layer of ecosystem support.

The title Light and Shadow Reborn, developed jointly by Arm and Sumo Digital, is the first to showcase the practical effects of the Mali G2-Ultra NX in neural graphics. Tencent's Public Technology Line is integrating Arm's neural network technology into Magic Dawn, its AI-driven game middleware platform, while Unity China has also incorporated the relevant capabilities natively into its Unity engine.

On the specific game front, NetEase's Where Winds Meet is integrating Arm's neural network technology into its Messiah engine and plans to release a version supporting NSS to players this year. Zhou Keli, head of the engine team at Where Winds Meet, stated that the game will be among the first titles to feature Arm's neural network technology. Meanwhile, Tencent is conducting NSSD technology demonstrations with Arm in Arena Breakout: Infinite, using neural super sampling and denoising to improve complex graphics scenes. Papergames' Infinity Nikki is also advancing NSS technology integration.

The market is now closely watching whether Arm can successfully drive the adoption of the Mali G2-Ultra NX into more Chinese developers' pipelines, as this will be a key factor in determining the technology's broader industry impact.
