Data released by the China Charging Alliance shows that as of the end of August 2026, the total number of electric vehicle charging infrastructure units (charging guns) across the country reached 24.223 million, representing a 39.6% increase compared to the same period last year.

Looking at public charging infrastructure specifically, there were 5.16 million public charging units (guns) nationwide, up 19.5% year-on-year. The total rated power of these units reached 262 million kilowatts, with an average power of approximately 50.69 kilowatts per gun. In the private sector, charging units totaled 19.063 million, showing a stronger growth of 46.3% year-on-year, with reported installed electricity capacity reaching 163 million kilovolt-amperes.

Regarding regional distribution, the top ten provinces and municipalities—Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, Shanghai, Fujian, Henan, Anhui, Sichuan, and Hebei—accounted for 66.2% of all public charging infrastructure construction. Electricity consumption for charging is concentrated mainly in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Hebei, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Shandong, Fujian, Henan, and Shaanxi. Power usage flows primarily to public buses and passenger vehicles, while sanitation logistics vehicles, taxis, and other vehicle types represent a relatively smaller share.

In August 2026, electricity consumption in the nationwide charging and battery-swapping service sector reached 12.49 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 780 million kilowatt-hours from the previous month. This represents a year-on-year growth of 54.3% and a month-on-month increase of 6.7%.

Aggregate infrastructure construction data for the first eight months of 2026 shows that total charging infrastructure additions reached 4.131 million units, a decline of 8.8% year-on-year. Among these, public charging infrastructure added 443,000 units, down 39.9% from last year, while private units increased by 3.688 million, representing a modest 2.8% year-on-year decrease. As of the end of August 2026, the cumulative national total of EV charging infrastructure units stood at 24.223 million, up 39.6% year-on-year.

Comparing infrastructure growth with vehicle sales, the first eight months of 2026 saw 4.131 million new charging units alongside domestic sales of 7.215 million new energy vehicles, indicating sustained rapid growth in both sectors. The incremental ratio of charging posts to vehicles stands at 1:1.7, suggesting that the current pace of charging infrastructure construction is broadly sufficient to support the fast expansion of the new energy vehicle market.
