The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the U.S. auto safety regulator, announced on Friday that it has closed a defect petition involving approximately 2.26 million Tesla Motors vehicles after finding no evidence of safety-related defects. A petition filed in March 2023 alleged that Tesla vehicles might increase the risk of pedal misapplication due to unique control methods, such as single-pedal driving, which could potentially lead to unintended acceleration. NHTSA stated that it did not find evidence of a defect or safety risk, citing a very small number of related incidents and data showing the vehicles responded as expected. Tesla Motors did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
