NVIDIA Divests Entire Stake in Arm Holdings, Ending Tumultuous Five-Year Chapter

NVIDIA Corporation has sold all of its remaining shares in Arm Holdings Plc. Arm is a chip architecture technology company that NVIDIA attempted to acquire five years ago, a deal which ultimately failed. According to a regulatory filing, NVIDIA disposed of 1.1 million shares in Arm, valued at approximately $140 million based on Arm's closing price on Tuesday. This divestment occurred at some point during the last quarter of the previous year, and following the transaction, NVIDIA's ownership stake in Arm was reduced to zero. NVIDIA declined to comment, and Arm did not immediately respond to media requests for comment. This move concludes a complex and often turbulent relationship between the two companies. Back in 2020, NVIDIA had agreed to acquire Arm for $40 billion, a transaction that would have been the largest acquisition in the history of the chip industry. However, the deal faced immediate opposition from regulators and customers. Arm's technology underpins the vast majority of the world's advanced semiconductor chips, and its independence is considered a critical asset. In February 2022, the two parties announced the termination of the acquisition agreement. Arm, which is controlled by SoftBank Group Corp., subsequently moved forward with its plans for an initial public offering.
