Hong Kong Market Alert | Optical Communication Stocks Slide as AI Giants Urge Slower Development Pace

Shares of optical communication companies led declines in Hong Kong trading, with Cambridge Industries Group (06166) dropping 5.89% to HK$113.4, Zhongji Innolight (03308) falling 5.30% to HK$1,108, Huitong Technology (01729) down 3.77% at HK$17.6, and YOFC (06869) slipping 3.11% to HK$177.8.

On the news front, three major US AI players—Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX AI—have jointly called for a slowdown in AI development, a rare coordinated move that has rattled market sentiment. Adding to the pressure, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the company will not pursue an initial public offering in 2026. He noted that, given the current wave of discussions surrounding AI safety issues, it is not the right time for a listing, and the company faces no immediate pressure to go public.

Analysts at Zheshang Securities pointed out that this development could put short-term pressure on AI hardware makers and large model developers. However, the medium-to-long-term outlook remains positive for AI applications and AI-enabled device companies. The secular trend of AI computing infrastructure build-out—particularly domestic computational capacity—remains intact, as global token usage continues to surge and inference-driven computing demand accelerates.
