HK Opening Bell
09/28

1. Market Overview

The Hang Seng Index opened up 0.18% at 24,554.58, adding 44 points as buyers cautiously extended last week’s rebound. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index firmed 0.36% to 8,195.43, while the tech-heavy Hang Seng Tech Index inched 0.29% higher to 4,324.48, reflecting a mild risk-on tone at the opening bell. Trading was orderly with sentiment aided by modest overnight gains on Wall Street and a stable mainland yuan.

Early interest gravitated toward internet platforms and select electric-vehicle makers, while defensives such as gold miners lagged. Software and entertainment counters also found support, helped by improving risk appetite. In contrast, leveraged products tracking overseas semiconductor names and domestic gold producers saw profit-taking pressure.

5. Opening Summary

The Hang Seng Index started the new week on a firm footing, nudging 0.18% higher to around 24,550 as investors digested a steadier global backdrop and resilient mainland data. The HSCEI outperformed with a 0.36% lift, while the Hang Seng Tech Index added 0.29%, signaling tentative risk appetite but no major breakouts above key psychological levels.

Large-cap tech provided a mild tail-wind. Music streaming platform TME (+1.73%) and gaming giant NetEase (+1.71%) led gains, followed by solid moves in Tencent (+1.10%) and U.S.-listed EV maker NIO’s Hong Kong shares (+1.07%). Alibaba slipped 0.55%, tempering the sector’s overall advance.

Among individual movers, precision component maker Zhaowei surged more than 6% to top the gainers’ list, while auto-parts firm Joyson Electric and blockchain play BLOKS each rallied over 3%. On the downside, a leveraged product tracking SK Hynix tumbled over 6%, and gold miners such as Shandong Gold and Lingbao Gold weakened by about 3% amid softer bullion prices.

With few fresh macro catalysts and no major economic data due today, traders focused on rotational plays within technology, healthcare and niche industrial themes. The IPO calendar remains light, keeping liquidity concentrated in secondary names. Investors now look to mainland PMI readings later this week for direction.
