Throughout July and August, Shanghai Pudong International Airport saw a total of 6.7 million出入境 traveler movements, averaging nearly 110,000 per day, sustaining a high volume of passenger flow. The demand for domestic family trips, study tours, and graduation travel was unleashed intensively, while the appeal of traveling to China among foreign tourists continued to climb. Dedicated efforts to refine port clearance services were implemented by the border inspection authorities to ensure robust safety and smooth passage for all travelers.

Parent-child groups and students formed the backbone of cross-border travel this summer, with statistics showing 2.2 million mainland residents departing from Pudong Airport. Notably, the proportion of travelers under 14 years old rose significantly, with most accompanied by two to three family members. Regarding outbound destinations, family trips favored traditional hot spots like Hong Kong, Macao, Southeast Asia, and South Korea, whereas study tours leaned toward Europe, the Americas, and Australia, witnessing growing popularity of long-haul routes to cities such as Venice and Barcelona.

In response to the travel peak, the border inspection station reinforced guidance beyond the waiting areas by assigning dedicated personnel to proactively direct eligible passengers to fast-track lanes, achieving clearance in mere seconds. Special assistance was provided for the elderly, infirm, pregnant women, and others with specific needs, while family travelers received point-to-point assistance from queue to inspection booth, allowing them to complete formalities together in one go. This approach blended efficiency with a warming show of service.

Alongside the robust outbound travel trend, inbound visits to China also heated up, with Pudong handling over 900,000 foreign arrivals during the summer, marking a 20% increase from last year. Visa-free entries accounted for 62% of these, reinforcing Shanghai's standing as the leading first stop for inbound travel to China. By nationality, South Korean visitors topped the list, followed by travelers from Russia, Japan, the United States, Thailand, and Malaysia.

As summer winds down, departures by mainland residents are tapering off, yet the influx of foreign tourists for leisure and business exhibitions continues to grow. German businessman Moritz, attending the International Tire & Wheel Expo in Shanghai, remarked, "This trip is for the expo, and China's tire market is immense. I am eager to see the strength of local brands, and the port clearance has been remarkably quick."

To manage the sustained high arrival volumes, the station leverages self-developed tools like the precise duty assistance system and scheduling software to forecast passenger numbers in real-time, dynamically adjusting staffing based on flight and traveler flow shifts, moving decision-making from intuition to data. Meanwhile, intelligent inspection booths across Terminal 2's arrival and departure zones have been comprehensively upgraded, paired with segmented inspection protocols for arriving foreigners, streamlined diversion, and optimized staffing to cut waiting times.

A dedicated 100-person multilingual volunteer team offers round-the-clock emergency translation and policy guidance, ensuring foreigners experience seamless communication upon landing. According to Yang Ming, head of the border inspection department, these initiatives have stabilized waiting times for arriving foreigners during peak periods to under 30 minutes, bolstering Shanghai's drive to foster a world-class business environment through efficient border services.
