US Retail Diesel Prices Surge Past $6.50 Per Gallon, Setting a New All-Time Nominal High

According to the latest data released by the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average retail price for diesel has climbed to $6.5050 per gallon, marking a fresh peak for diesel prices across the United States.

Since the start of 2026, heightened geopolitical tensions between the US and nations such as Iran have severely disrupted global supply chains for both crude oil and refined petroleum products. International crude futures have once again surpassed the $100-per-barrel threshold, directly pushing up refining and retail costs at the pump.

Global diesel supply has tightened, and while US refinery utilization rates remain elevated, the pressure to replenish middle-distillate inventories is immense. With seasonal maintenance on the horizon, market concerns over future supply availability are deepening.

As diesel serves as the lifeblood fuel for road freight, railways, maritime shipping, and agricultural machinery, its relentless price surge is steadily translating into elevated logistics expenses. Major logistics operators, including Amazon, FedEx, and UPS, have already introduced temporary fuel or freight surcharges, and these rising costs are ultimately being passed through to the final prices of groceries and a wide array of consumer goods, exerting sustained inflationary pressure on the broader economy.
