Xiaomi's Extended-Range Vehicles Redefine Cabin Space Through a Critical Underbody Innovation

A frequently overlooked underbody detail is transforming the way we experience seating in automobiles, with Xiaomi Corp. leveraging this foundation to market its vehicles as versatile living spaces. During the recent launch event for the Xiaomi Pengcheng series, founder and CEO Lei Jun dedicated substantial time to demonstrating the vehicles' multiple spatial usage modes, boldly declaring "Only SkyNomad Can Do" to emphasize the platform's unique capabilities.

The Xiaomi Pengcheng series features seats and a center console that glide along a completely flat floor, enabling configurations such as a business lounge created by rotating the front seats 180 degrees to face the rear passengers. These adaptable layouts sparked widespread discussion after the event, with enthusiasts rapidly inventing additional use cases. This versatility is made possible by the Xiaomi Kunlun platform, which underpins the vehicle with a front-to-rear continuous pure flat floor.

Many drivers recall the discomfort of sitting in the middle of a rear seat, with feet awkwardly straddling a prominent central tunnel or forced into an elevated position. In recent years, however, that dreaded hump has increasingly disappeared, with a growing number of models featuring completely level rear floors that allow passengers' feet to rest naturally.

Unlocking Cabin Space and Expanding Vehicle Use Cases

The pure flat floor is no longer exclusive to a handful of models, as hybrids, fully electric vehicles, and even traditional combustion-engine cars now incorporate the design. The Xiaomi Pengcheng series stands out as a representative example, built on the Xiaomi Kunlun platform that pairs a continuous pure flat floor with an ultra-long sliding rail system to deliver expandable spatial capability. The platform's highly integrated flat floor extends from the cockpit to the trunk, measuring up to 2.9 meters in length with a nearly level angle, all while maintaining a slim 298mm floor thickness that supports a more spacious cabin layout.

Functionally, the Pengcheng series' front seats can rotate 180 degrees for face-to-face seating with second-row passengers. Sliding the Pengcheng N90 Max's second row fully rearward unlocks up to 1550mm of legroom. Combined with a movable center console and extendable table, the N90 Max transforms into a temporary meeting room, with all these arrangements relying on the flat floor foundation.

Even combustion-engine vehicles, including all-wheel-drive models, can achieve a flat floor. The Cadillac XT5, for instance, employs an additional gear set at its four-wheel-drive output to significantly lower the height of the driveshaft connection point. With the driveshaft lowered and routed close to the underbody, engineers can position it away from the cabin floor, enabling a completely level rear floor.

Engineering Efforts to Free Up Space in the Cabin

A pure flat floor refers to a cabin state where the surface from behind the front seats to the rear seat area has no central protrusion or only an extremely low one. It's crucial to note that achieving this cannot be done by simply raising the floor, as that would compress vertical headroom, negating the benefits.

The advantages of a flat floor are immediately apparent. Comfort improves significantly, particularly for the middle passenger in a 2+3 seating layout, who historically endured the "cold bench" due to the central tunnel that left feet with no comfortable resting place. A level floor allows that passenger's feet to sit naturally. Additionally, the flat surface releases flexibility in cabin configuration, enabling movable center consoles and adjustable seat positions, as highlighted in the Xiaomi Pengcheng models where in-car conversations and "living room" modes are core selling points. The design also creates a convenient aisle through the second row, facilitating easier movement for children or pets during travel.

While the benefits are clear, translating the design from blueprint to production presents complex engineering challenges, primarily stemming from component space interference under the chassis. Exhaust pipes, fuel tanks, batteries, and high-voltage wiring must all fit within the limited underbody space while maintaining a thin yet unobstructed cabin floor.

Different powertrain types employ distinct strategies to solve these issues. Combustion-engine vehicles face the most intricate situation, managing both exhaust systems and driveshaft channels for rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive configurations. Solutions include flattening the mid-section muffler for closer underbody mounting, offsetting the exhaust pipe toward the passenger side to free up the center, and some sedans even slightly lowering the chassis's lowest point, though this risks increased underbody scraping. Hybrid and extended-range models must accommodate fuel systems alongside large battery packs, making underbody space exceptionally precious. Engineers address this with flat, space-optimized fuel tanks tucked into rear residual spaces, while exhaust pipes run along chassis edges or through dedicated channels beside the battery pack. These powertrains also eliminate the central driveshaft entirely by placing the electric drive unit directly on the rear axle, removing the root cause of the central hump.

Battery pack slimming is equally vital, as early electric vehicle batteries were thick enough to elevate the entire floor and reduce headroom. Advances in cell energy density and CTP (cell-to-pack) technology have compressed battery thickness to roughly 10 centimeters. Fully electric vehicles enjoy a natural advantage here, with no exhaust or driveshaft constraints and batteries that can lay flat across the chassis center, inherently avoiding central protrusions. The rising adoption of CTC (cell-to-chassis) technology, which integrates cells directly into the chassis frame, makes the battery part of the floor structure itself, further enhancing flatness. Overall, particularly in the new-energy era, optimized underbody layouts and component designs have made the pure flat floor a standard feature across most models, boosting space utilization efficiency and enabling increasingly diverse interior configurations.

The Skateboard Chassis: Pushing the Concept to the Extreme

Beyond the flat floor, the "skateboard chassis" has emerged as a related yet distinct concept in recent years. A skateboard chassis is a highly integrated, independent driving module that consolidates the battery, motors, electronic control, steering, braking, and thermal management systems into a single flat, skateboard-like underbody platform. Its core philosophy is "upper-lower body decoupling," where the body and chassis can be independently developed and freely combined, much like a smartphone's motherboard and shell.

The relationship between a skateboard chassis and a pure flat floor is complementary rather than identical. A flat floor describes a physical state of cabin space, while a skateboard chassis describes a system-level technical approach. The pure flat floor is a design goal, and the skateboard chassis is an advanced means to achieve it. A genuine skateboard chassis, with its flat battery layout and fully wire-controlled structure, almost inevitably delivers a pure flat floor result. Conversely, an ordinary electric vehicle with a flat floor is not automatically a skateboard chassis, as it may still employ a traditional load-bearing body architecture.

Conclusion: Flat Floors Driving New Scenarios and Experience Gains

From the raised tunnel of the combustion-engine era to the level floors of the electric age, and now the upper-lower decoupling championed by skateboard chassis, this seemingly simple flat floor design illustrates the progression of automotive technology. Through continued innovation, the pure flat floor frees rear middle passengers from cramped seating, unlocks a broader range of in-cabin usage modes, and enhances the overall ownership experience on multiple fronts. As new-energy vehicles expand the variety of usage scenarios, the advantages of a flat floor are shifting from a "nice-to-have" feature to a decisive factor for a growing number of consumers selecting their next model.
