BKV Corp Launches Carbon Sequestration Operations at Eagle Ford, Expanding Its CCUS Portfolio

BKV Corp has recently announced the official commencement of operations at its carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the Eagle Ford shale region. This marks the company's third operational facility of this kind, following the Barnett Zero and Cotton Cove projects.

With the successful start-up of both the Cotton Cove and Eagle Ford CCS projects in the first half of 2026, BKV has met its target of initiating injection at the Eagle Ford site before the June 30 deadline.

The Eagle Ford CCS project is situated near an active natural gas processing plant in Freer, South Texas. It was developed in partnership with a large, diversified midstream energy company. Under the agreement, BKV will purchase the carbon dioxide waste stream from the plant. After compression and transportation, the CO2 will be permanently sequestered via a nearby injection well, with BKV retaining all associated environmental attributes for the project.

The project has secured a Class II injection well permit from the Texas Railroad Commission, and its Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) plan has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The facility is projected to achieve an average annual sequestration rate of approximately 90,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

The start-up of this new facility significantly expands BKV's carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) portfolio. This portfolio now includes the operational Barnett Zero facility, which has sequestered about 347,400 metric tons of CO2 since its launch in November 2023; the Cotton Cove project, which achieved first injection in April and is expected to sequester roughly 32,000 metric tons annually; and the newly operational Eagle Ford project.

BKV Corp. stated that it is progressing on schedule with its East Texas project and two additional CCUS projects in the Western Haynesville region in collaboration with Comstock Resources. The company's target is to achieve an annual injection capacity of 1.5 million metric tons by 2028.

The CEO of BKV commented that the addition of this new CCS project further demonstrates the company's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions from its owned and operated upstream and midstream natural gas business. The partnership with one of the nation's largest energy companies is described as crucial for advancing its closed-loop net-zero strategy.
