Invesco Strategist Suggests September Rate Hike Not Guaranteed, With Upcoming Inflation and Labor Data Set to Play a Critical Role

The recent Jackson Hole global central bank symposium underscored that the Federal Reserve remains firmly committed to achieving its 2% inflation target. Should the pace of disinflation stall, the door for additional monetary tightening remains wide open, according to market signals from the event.

David Chao, Invesco's Asia-Pacific Global Market Strategist, noted that while the Jackson Hole gathering has elevated market expectations for a potential rate increase, a September hike is far from a done deal. He observed that Fed Chair Warsh aimed to reduce reliance on forward guidance and did not provide a clear signal regarding a September move, making upcoming inflation and labor market data absolutely vital.

Chao pointed out that Fed Chair Warsh delivered a notably more hawkish address than investors had anticipated, making it clear that policy easing is not on the near-term agenda. Warsh emphasized that price stability should be the Fed's primary focus, a statement widely interpreted as leaving the door open for further tightening should inflation fail to show sustained improvement.

At the same time, Warsh expressed confidence in the broader U.S. economy. Growth remains resilient, the labor market is steady, and the country is operating at full employment. Both consumer and investment spending remain robust, with the latter being fueled by continuously expanding capital expenditures related to artificial intelligence.

This combination of resilient economic growth and sticky inflation explains why markets have swiftly increased their pricing for further rate hikes. As a result, U.S. Treasury yields have climbed and the dollar has strengthened.

Chao believes that high interest rates persisting for an extended period could trigger periodic market volatility. Longer-duration assets remain extremely sensitive to yield fluctuations, and equity valuations could face downward pressure if bond yields continue to rise.

However, the Jackson Hole symposium also served as a reminder that the U.S. economy still exhibits remarkable resilience. This solid economic foundation continues to underpin risk assets. Chao maintains a positive outlook on market segments tied to structural growth themes such as artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, while remaining selective in fixed income investments and closely monitoring duration risk.
