U.S. Director of National Intelligence Resigns, Citing Family Health Reasons Amid Reports of White House Pressure

On the 22nd local time, U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced on social media that she had submitted her resignation to President Trump that day to care for her husband, who is battling cancer. Reports have emerged suggesting that Gabbard was effectively forced out by the White House.

In her resignation letter, Gabbard stated that her husband was recently diagnosed with "an extremely rare form of bone cancer," and her resignation will take effect on June 30. On the same day, President Trump announced on social media that Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lucas will serve as the acting Director of National Intelligence.

It is reported that Gabbard had been marginalized within the White House's national security decision-making framework in recent months. President Trump had expressed dissatisfaction with her and was considering potential replacements.

Gabbard has long opposed U.S. government military interventions abroad and has held differing views from President Trump on issues related to Iran's nuclear program. Following a large-scale military operation by the U.S. and Israel against Iran in late February, she publicly testified before Congress that Iran was not attempting to reconstitute its nuclear program and declined to confirm that Iran posed an imminent threat as claimed by the U.S. administration.

Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman who later left the Democratic Party, supported President Trump during the 2024 presidential election. After Trump's victory, he nominated her to serve as Director of National Intelligence, responsible for overseeing the coordination of the United States' 18 intelligence agencies.

Since the beginning of this year, several members of President Trump's cabinet, including the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Attorney General, and the Secretary of Labor, have resigned.
