CICC Appoints New Chief Economist, Succeeding Retired Peng Wensheng

CICC has appointed a new chief economist following the retirement of its previous officeholder. The firm's former chief strategist and managing director has taken over the role.

Miao Yanliang has been named the new Chief Economist of CICC. He succeeds Mr. Peng Wensheng, who has retired upon reaching the age limit. Mr. Miao previously served as CICC's Chief Strategist and Managing Director.

Born in March 1980, Mr. Miao holds a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Shanghai University, a Master's degree in Economics from Fudan University, and both a Ph.D. in Economics and a Master's in Public Policy from Princeton University. His career includes roles as a visiting scholar at the Bank of Israel and a special assistant to Governor Stanley Fischer, as well as a position as an economist at the International Monetary Fund where he participated in the European debt crisis rescue. He later worked at the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) for a decade, serving as Chief Economist, before joining CICC in March 2023 as Chief Strategist and Head of the Research Department.

The retiring Mr. Peng Wensheng holds a Bachelor's degree from Nankai University and a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham. A former student at the People's Bank of China Graduate School, his career includes roles as an economist at the IMF, a senior executive at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and chief economist at Barclays Capital, CICC, CITIC Securities, and Everbright Securities. He returned to CICC in June 2020.
