Eleven New Professions and Twenty-Three New Job Roles Announced Amid Significant Labor Shortages

In a recent announcement, the eighth batch of emerging professions has been unveiled, introducing 11 new job categories and 23 distinct roles. This raises a critical question: which sectors are facing the most pressing talent gaps, and which of these new roles might be accessible for the average person seeking a career change? The details are outlined below.

The 11 new professions include digital twin engineers, embodied intelligent robot application technicians, industrial product digital modelers, sports data analysts, microgrid administrators, hydrogen fuel cell manufacturers, water electrolysis hydrogen production workers, incense crafting artists, ship shore-based management engineering technicians, satellite navigation equipment installers, and corporate sustainable development planners.

The 23 new job roles encompass community workers, fire rescue medics, lottery salespersons, airport clearance inspectors, raw sugar custodians, low-altitude logistics operators, food production safety officers, catering food safety inspectors, food sales safety supervisors, low-altitude intelligent network system administrators, intelligent agent developers, construction project labor relations specialists, new energy vehicle inspectors, aging-friendly renovation designers, sports venue safety officers, fresh-cut flower processors, smart furniture installers, ice and snow sculptors, oil residue extraction device operators, polyglycolic acid device operators, embodied intelligent robot data collectors, embodied intelligent robot trainers, and corporate sustainable investment analysts.

This latest release notably includes 5 digital occupations and 3 green occupations. With this addition, the total count of digital and green professions in China has now reached 113 and 142, respectively. In the modern services category, the newly introduced roles span both those supporting corporate growth and industrial advancement—such as sustainable development planners, airport clearance inspectors, and intelligent agent developers—and those catering to the public's quality-of-life needs, including incense crafting artists, smart furniture installers, and fresh-cut flower processors.

Why have these been designated as new professions? The primary reason is that the workforce in these fields has reached a certain scale, and they offer substantial future growth potential. In a word, there is a massive shortage of talent. For instance, the embodied intelligent industry currently faces a talent deficit of one million workers. Demand for "embodied intelligent robot application technicians" alone has surged by 30% in just one year. Similarly, with 43.97 million new energy vehicles on the road but fewer than 100,000 experienced certified technicians, the role of "new energy vehicle inspector" has become highly sought after. In the eldercare sector, where China's population aged 60 and above exceeds 323 million, positions like "aging-friendly renovation designers," who might retrofit a bathroom or install safety rails for seniors, are increasingly vital.

Given these abundant opportunities, how can one enter the field? Industry experts suggest that individuals with a background in automotive electrics could consider technical roles such as heavy vehicle mechanics or smart furniture installers. Those looking to pivot into emerging sectors might explore new roles like low-altitude logistics operators or intelligent agent developers. For those with a creative and hands-on aptitude, pursuing careers as incense crafting artists, fresh-cut flower processors, or ice and snow sculptors could be ideal.

To support the growth of these new professions, the state is advancing the "Skills Illuminate the Future" initiative, which focuses on areas such as the low-altitude economy, new energy vehicles, artificial intelligence, and wellness services. Through this program, over 10 million training subsidies are provided annually. To date, China has cumulatively released 121 new professions across eight batches, each characterized by distinct features. From a classification perspective, the largest additions fall under social production and life services personnel, totaling 72 roles and representing 60% of the total. Professional and technical personnel, along with production and manufacturing-related occupations, each account for 21 roles, making up 17% respectively.

Analyzed by industry, modern services and advanced manufacturing have seen the most significant increases, comprising 43% and 34% of new roles, respectively. Looking at emerging and future industries, digital and green occupations have expanded annually, now totaling 58 and 20 roles, which represent 48% and 17% of the total, respectively. Going forward, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security will continue to actively identify and cultivate new occupational sequences in response to evolving economic and social trends, creating fresh employment opportunities and expanding the overall capacity for job creation.
