AI and Bitcoin Compete for Scarce Resources: Mining Firms Pivot to High-Performance Computing

Peter Schiff, speaking through Woofun AI on August 23, 2026, pushed back against the narrative that Bitcoin and artificial intelligence operate in synergy, arguing instead that the two technologies are locked in direct competition for essential resources. The longtime gold advocate made clear on X that AI is not a driver of Bitcoin's price appreciation but rather a rival vying for the same critical inputs. His remarks cast a spotlight on a fundamental tension over resource allocation that is increasingly defining the current market environment.

Interestingly, as Bitcoin mining companies increasingly adopt high-performance computing techniques, their holdings in electricity, land, and cooling systems are being reassessed for new purposes. This shift has not weakened the cryptocurrency industry; rather, it underscores the enduring value of such infrastructure at a time when demand for computational power is surging. Schiff identified the core battleground as spanning three areas: investment capital, electricity, and data center infrastructure.

On the capital front, while the exact scale of diverted funds is difficult to measure, the enormous spending flowing into AI has created a powerful alternative destination for technology investments. The infrastructure competition is more tangible. IREN Ltd (NASDAQ: IREN) has struck a $9.7 billion deal with Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: MSFT) to build AI cloud infrastructure and enhance large-scale computing capabilities. According to Woofun AI's analysis, IREN's pivot from its core Bitcoin mining operations toward infrastructure services backed by substantial power resources illustrates the commercial logic of reallocating these assets.

Similarly, TeraWulf Inc (NASDAQ: WULF) has entered into a long-term agreement with Anthropic to supply approximately 401 megawatts of critical IT computing capacity, a deal expected to generate around $19 billion in revenue over its initial term. This further confirms the strategic importance of power supply and existing infrastructure in the AI race. Core Scientific Inc (NASDAQ: CORZ) has likewise broadened its scope beyond traditional mining by signing a long-term high-performance computing agreement with CoreWeave Inc (NASDAQ: CRWV). The company is now dedicating a portion of its power infrastructure to support AI computing tasks, demonstrating how mining facilities can serve clients outside the Bitcoin ecosystem.

For the Bitcoin network itself, this transformation does not necessarily constitute a loss. Mining difficulty adjusts automatically in response to changes in network participation, ensuring that the system continues to function smoothly even if individual miners redirect their computing resources elsewhere. Meanwhile, these companies can monetize their power-related assets through AI ventures while maintaining ties to the Bitcoin market via mining operations or bitcoin reserves, achieving a diversified asset allocation strategy.
