Container Shipping Giant Maersk Raises Full-Year Profit Forecast Amid Strong Market Demand

Container shipping giant Maersk (AMKBY.US), often seen as a barometer for global trade, has raised its profit forecast for the current year, citing robust demand, particularly from Asian markets, and expectations that the global container shipping market will remain healthy for the rest of the year.

The company stated it has increased its guidance ranges for both underlying earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), with both now above analyst expectations. Concurrently, free cash flow is also projected to be better than previously anticipated.

Maersk now forecasts that global container shipping volumes will increase by approximately 4% this year, an upgrade from its previous forecast range of 2% to 4%. Shipping companies are benefiting as shippers book cargo space in advance, driven by supply chain disruptions from factors like the conflict in the Middle East and uncertainty around U.S. tariff policies, which have pushed up recent spot freight rates for containers.

Typically, the months of July and August see a seasonal increase in ocean freight volumes as retailers restock ahead of the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons. Freight rates on the trans-Pacific routes have risen due to this strong demand.

Maersk's more optimistic outlook aligns with comments made by CEO Vincent Clerc in an interview last week in Vietnam. Clerc stated, "Despite the wars and disturbances in the energy markets, demand has remained strong in the first half of the year. For us, it looks like this trend is highly likely to continue for the rest of the year."

Maersk is scheduled to release its second-quarter interim results for 2026 on August 13.
