On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the Port of Long Beach, trucks moved through container yards surrounded by stacks of shipping containers and port cranes.

Data released Tuesday by the US Department of Commerce showed that the US trade deficit widened sharply in August, driven by a surge of imports tied to artificial intelligence industry construction as well as fluctuations in import tariff policy.

Imports jumped 4.3% during the month, pushing the total trade deficit to $105.6 billion.

That figure climbed 13.7% from July and exceeded the $102 billion forecast by economists surveyed by Dow Jones.

It also marks the highest deficit since the record peak in March 2025, which came just before President Donald Trump announced so-called "Liberation Day" reciprocal tariffs on US trading partners.

Despite the higher monthly deficit, the cumulative trade deficit through August of this year stood at $138.2 billion, down nearly 20% compared with the same period last year.
