Acting President Lu Dayin's Extended Tenure at Orient Securities Raises Succession Questions

The prolonged acting presidency of Lu Dayin at Orient Securities, exceeding 16 months without formal appointment, has sparked speculation about the future leadership of the company. This uncertainty comes as Orient Securities announces its planned acquisition of Shanghai Securities.

Lu Dayin, a 25-year veteran of Orient Securities, has been serving as the acting president since December 23, 2024. He rose through the ranks from an IT staff member to become the Chief Information Officer and concurrently serves as Chairman of Orient Futures. Recognized as the key driver behind the company's digital transformation, he oversaw technology investments totaling approximately 2.8 billion yuan and led Orient Futures to strong performance.

Despite his long service and technical expertise, Lu has not been formally appointed to the president position. The situation remained unchanged after Zhou Lei assumed the chairman role in March 2026, having been appointed from Shenergy Group.

The ongoing acquisition of Shanghai Securities, announced on April 19 with trading suspension, presents a significant test for management. The merger could potentially place the combined entity among the top ten securities firms by total assets. This transaction highlights a potential challenge for Lu, whose background in financial technology and futures differs from the investment banking and merger integration expertise required for this major consolidation.

Industry comparisons show that acting presidents at securities firms typically receive permanent appointments within six to eight months. Examples include Du Wanzhong at Guohai Securities, who was confirmed in about two months, and Zhou Zhongshan at Great Wall Securities, appointed within six months. Lu's 16-month acting tenure substantially exceeds these norms. A closer parallel exists with Xiong Leiming at Minsheng Securities, who served as acting president for nearly two years before confirmation, though Xiong brought financial and investment banking experience from his previous role as financial chief at Changjiang Securities, unlike Lu's purely technical background.

Three potential scenarios exist for the presidential appointment. First, Lu Dayin could secure the position if he demonstrates strong cross-functional leadership during the Shanghai Securities integration. His quarter-century of company experience would facilitate a smooth transition. Second, an internal candidate might emerge from among senior vice presidents like Shu Hong or Zhang Jianhui, both with over 26 years at Orient Securities, or other key executives such as Chief Research Director Chen Gang or Chief Investment Officer Wu Zezhi. Third, an external appointment could occur, following the precedent set by Chairman Zhou Lei's appointment from Shenergy Group. Recent industry examples include Zhu Jiangtao's move from China Merchants Bank to lead China Merchants Securities, and Xi Rui's market recruitment by Chengtong Securities. An external candidate with investment banking and merger experience might better align with the strategic needs of integrating Shanghai Securities.

The most likely outcome appears to be an external appointment, potentially from the Shenergy system or Guotai Junan system, to support Zhou Lei's integration strategy. Lu Dayin's confirmation remains a secondary possibility, contingent on his performance during the merger process. Internal promotion is considered the least probable option, with current executives more likely to maintain stabilizing roles supporting new leadership.

The resolution of this leadership question is expected in the second half of 2026, coinciding with critical decision points in the Shanghai Securities acquisition process.
