In 2026, the first year of the implementation of the "National Reading Promotion Regulations" and the inaugural year of the "National Reading Activity Week" approved by the State Council, a special reading event titled "Fragrance of Books, Intangible Heritage, Craftsmanship, and Shared Reading" was launched on April 20. The event, jointly organized by the Propaganda Department of Longhua District in Haikou, the Haikou Longhua District Women's Federation, and the Longhua District Cultural Center Library, took place in the historic Qilou Old Street. Aligned with the requirements of the "National Reading Promotion Regulations," the activity combined reading with intangible cultural heritage in an innovative format to promote the inheritance of China’s outstanding traditional culture and foster a strong social atmosphere of loving, reading, and appreciating good books.

The event was divided into two main segments: shared reading of classics and hands-on intangible cultural heritage crafts. During the shared reading session of "Chinese Culture Class," Zhong Guojun, a scholar deeply engaged in Hainan culture, guided participants through classics such as the "Book of Songs," "Analects," and Tang poetry. He led discussions on the continuity of Chinese cultural heritage, allowing attendees to experience the millennia-old wisdom and insights of ancient sages. His profound understanding and passion for traditional culture inspired everyone to draw cultural nourishment from these texts and strengthen cultural confidence. Participants found the session highly rewarding. In the craft segment, instructors from the intangible heritage field provided on-site guidance, teaching attendees how to use gardenia fruit as a natural dye for tie-dye techniques. Participants immersed themselves in dyeing spring colors onto scarves, experiencing the beauty of intangible cultural heritage firsthand. By integrating classic literature with traditional plant-dyeing craftsmanship, the event allowed attendees to appreciate the charm of traditional culture amid the fragrance of books and natural dyes.

Moving forward, Longhua District will continue to follow the guidance of the "National Reading Promotion Regulations" by preserving and promoting China’s outstanding traditional culture. Efforts will focus on blending reading with cultural experiences, enriching public reading environments, and innovating reading promotion methods. The district aims to deepen the integration of book culture and intangible heritage through diverse, accessible cultural activities that advance the development of a reading-oriented society. These initiatives are intended to revitalize traditional culture in the modern era, enhancing the public's sense of cultural fulfillment and happiness. As part of the National Reading Week, everyone is encouraged to read more and read better—understanding China through texts and strengthening cultural confidence through the world of books.
