Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po stated in a blog post on August 16 that approximately 140 airlines currently operate flights connecting Hong Kong to over 225 destinations worldwide. Efficient international links and a series of major events have attracted more business and leisure travelers to the city.

In the first seven months of this year, Hong Kong recorded 31.22 million visitor arrivals, a 12% increase compared to the same period last year. Chan noted that in the first half of the year, flight movements at Hong Kong International Airport exceeded 200,000, up 4.4% year-on-year, while passenger throughput reached 32.8 million, a rise of 11.7%.

Many domestic and international travelers who have used Hong Kong International Airport have given high praise to the travel experience. The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) is actively promoting the development of a "smart airport," leveraging biometric recognition, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things to comprehensively upgrade airport facilities, enhance flight operational efficiency, and improve the overall passenger experience.

Previously launched "LeaveSmart" service uses facial recognition technology to streamline check-in, baggage drop-off, and security screening processes. It now covers approximately 80% of departing passengers at the airport. In 2025, the AAHK unveiled the "SKYTOPIA" brand under the "Airport City" development blueprint.

Chan said that the second phase of AsiaWorld-Expo, along with supporting facilities for yacht tourism under the SKYTOPIA brand, is expected to be completed by 2028. Additionally, Hong Kong plans to establish an art industry hub in the area, integrating artistic creation, appreciation, trading, and storage.

Chan emphasized that the government will adopt a multi-pronged approach to consolidate and enhance Hong Kong's status as an international aviation hub, injecting new vitality into the linked development of other economic sectors. The AAHK will also strengthen cooperation with Zhuhai Airport to attract more transit passengers, and collaborate with Dongguan to promote an innovative sea-air-land cargo intermodal transport model.
