Data shows that retail investor enthusiasm for stock buying cooled in August, with some positions reduced during the early-month rally, causing Charles Schwab's index measuring stock holdings and trading activity to drop by 3.9%. As U.S. Treasury yields rose and energy prices surged during the month, this cautious market sentiment may indicate that investors are preparing to apply the brakes to this prolonged bull market.

Joe Mazzola, Head of Trading and Derivatives Strategy at Charles Schwab, noted that investors' wait-and-see stance is reflected in funds gradually rotating toward ETFs rather than individual stocks. He pointed out that "funds are shifting toward diversified ETFs," with four ETF products among the top ten net-buying targets for Schwab clients. Additionally, across the 11 sectors of the S&P 500, retail investors only net-purchased the industrials, utilities, and real estate sectors, all of which represent typical defensive assets.

At the individual stock level, Mazzola stated that Elon Musk's SpaceX was undeniably the most favored target for retail clients in August. Other major net-buying stocks included Micron Technology, Nvidia, Intel, and Alphabet. Retail investors net-sold other large-cap tech stocks: Palantir Technologies, Microsoft, ServiceNow, Salesforce, and Oracle.

Schwab's trading activity index (STAX) retreated from July's four-year high of 59.80 to 57.50 in August. The STAX index is calculated based on stock holdings and trading behavior from millions of Schwab client accounts. Another sentiment survey shows that as September begins, Schwab clients' bullish sentiment toward the stock market has slightly rebounded. Mazzola commented that clients are "defensive, but not significantly pessimistic." Investor bullishness is strongest in energy stocks, which Schwab attributes in part to market focus on AI-driven energy demand.
