Movement Alert|Global X Copper Miners ETF Falls 5.06% in Pre-Market Trading, Copper Prices Plunge After Record Highs as Tariff Uncertainty Triggers Sell-Off

On September 10, Global X Copper Miners ETF fell 5.06% in pre-market trading, trading at $90.47/share, with turnover of $7.15 million. The decline tracked a broad sell-off across industrial metals, with LME copper plunging over 3.5% and COMEX copper futures dropping more than 4%.

The sharp reversal came after copper prices had surged to record highs near $15,000 per metric tonne on the LME, with both New York and London copper benchmarks setting fresh all-time peaks earlier in the session. Reports indicated that the White House has not yet made a decision on refined copper tariffs, undermining a key pillar of the recent rally. The prior run-up had been fueled by expectations of U.S. tariffs on refined copper prompting massive pre-emptive shipments to American warehouses, draining non-U.S. inventories and creating acute regional supply imbalances.

Analysts had already flagged bubble risks as copper approached $15,000, noting that the rally was increasingly driven by speculative positioning and cross-market arbitrage rather than fundamental demand improvement. LME copper had gained approximately 14% year-to-date and nearly 45% over the past twelve months before the pullback.

Global X Copper Miners ETF invests at least 80% of its total assets in the securities of an underlying index designed to measure broad-based equity market performance of global companies involved in the copper mining industry.
