The release of Corning's second-quarter financial results sparked a sharp decline in its stock price, pulling down a basket of optical communication component stocks linked to the artificial intelligence supply chain.

The drop marks the stock's worst single-day performance since July 30, 2002. Following the earnings disappointment, shares of Marvell, Lumentum, AXT, and Coherent all tumbled by more than 10%.

Corning, the glass and fiber optics giant, reported its second-quarter results on Tuesday, sending its shares down 18% and dragging down the entire AI-related optical communication component sector. Although both revenue and earnings per share exceeded market expectations, the company's guidance for the current quarter's revenue fell short of the Wall Street consensus.

The company forecasts core revenue in the range of $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion, representing 16% growth, while the institutional consensus estimate from FactSet was $5.0 billion. Corning reported earnings per share of $0.78 before the market opened on Tuesday, surpassing the expected $0.76, and total revenue of $4.74 billion, also beating the market's forecast of $4.61 billion.

This plunge is on track to be Corning's worst single-day performance since July 30, 2002, when the stock fell 21.59%.

After the earnings release, shares of optical communication manufacturers such as Marvell, Lumentum, AXT, and Coherent all fell by more than 10%.

Industry Context

Corning's networking solutions and fiber optic cable products are increasingly vital in the construction of AI data centers. These hardware components enable high-speed interconnections between data centers, server racks, and computing chips, serving as essential infrastructure for high-speed data transmission in AI computing clusters.

In June, Corning finalized a new multi-year supply agreement to provide hardware networking support for Amazon's rapidly expanding data center clusters. In recent months, driven by surging computing demand from major hyperscale cloud providers and AI companies, Corning has secured several large-scale orders worth billions of dollars.
