Following OpenAI's disclosure that its AI tool unintentionally breached another company's internal system, over 1,100 employees from leading artificial intelligence enterprises have signed a petition. The petition calls on the U.S. government to support the establishment of a mechanism that would deliberately control the pace of AI development when necessary, preventing technological advancement from moving too quickly.

Organizers report that the petition has been signed by staff from nearly a dozen companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, Google, and Meta Platforms Inc. The petition urges the United States to back an international effort to set the tempo for the research and development of more advanced AI systems when needed. The document warns that the speed of AI progress "may indeed" outpace humanity's ability to "understand or control" it.

Google issued a statement saying: "We are committed to developing AI in a safe and responsible manner, allowing this technology to benefit society." This petition echoes recent appeals from several AI industry leaders. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, among others, have previously called for the creation of new international oversight bodies to review frontier AI models and establish standards.
