Santos Limited (STO.AU) surged 5.03% during intraday trading on Tuesday, marking a standout performance in the Australian energy sector as multiple positive catalysts drove the stock higher.

The rally was fueled by the company's announcement that it had loaded and dispatched its first 450,000-barrel crude cargo from the Pikka phase one project on Alaska's North Slope. The cargo was loaded aboard the Polar Resolution at the Valdez Marine Terminal for delivery to US West Coast refineries, marking the start of commercial exports from the project. Santos operates Pikka with a 51% interest, while Repsol holds the remaining 49%. The Pikka phase one project is currently producing approximately 23,000 barrels of oil per day and is expected to reach its plateau production of 80,000 barrels per day in the third quarter of 2026.

Broader sector tailwinds also contributed to the gains, as energy stocks across the Australian market rallied on the back of strong oil prices. Overnight, oil prices settled 5% higher after Iran and the United States traded demands for compensation, dimming prospects for a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The energy sub-index rose as much as 2.8% to its highest level since late July, with Santos emerging as one of the top performers among large-cap stocks.
