Philippine Peso Plunges to Record Low Against US Dollar

The Philippine peso has tumbled to an unprecedented low against the US dollar, breaching historical levels during trading on Monday. Market data reveals the currency weakened significantly, touching a record-breaking exchange rate that marks the weakest point in the nation's financial history.

According to the Philippine Bankers Association, the peso opened the trading session at 61.85 to the dollar before sliding to an intraday low of 61.995. This dramatic decline surpassed the previous all-time low of 61.847 recorded on July 24, setting a new benchmark for the weakest performance since the country achieved independence.

Analysts attribute the currency's persistent depreciation to the Philippines' heavy reliance on imported energy. The sustained surge in global oil prices throughout this year has severely impacted the nation's trade balance and inflation outlook, placing continued downward pressure on the peso. With international crude costs remaining elevated, the currency has struggled to regain stability amid mounting economic challenges.

The record-breaking slump underscores the growing strain on the Philippine economy as it grapples with external headwinds. As energy import bills swell and inflationary pressures intensify, market observers expect the peso to remain vulnerable to further volatility in the near term.
