President Donald Trump has attributed a cyberattack on multiple water systems in Minnesota to state officials with whom he has a long-standing feud, despite reports suggesting Iranian hackers may be responsible.

According to U.S. federal and state officials cited in reports, an initial assessment indicated the attack could have been carried out by Iranian hackers. However, Trump dismissed this evaluation during a Cabinet meeting at the Camp David presidential retreat on Friday.

"We heard there was a cyberattack in Minnesota, and they blamed it on Iran. I don't think so. I think it's because Minnesota is extremely incompetent," Trump stated.

Trump has a history of criticizing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat who served as Kamala Harris's running mate in the 2024 presidential election, which Trump and his running mate JD Vance won. Tensions between the Trump administration and Minnesota authorities previously escalated earlier this year after two U.S. citizens were killed by immigration enforcement officers during street protests.

"Thirty water plants were cyberattacked, and I blame Minnesota and its governor, that corrupt Minnesota governor. They like to say, 'Oh, it was Iran.' If only Iran were that capable. Iran has far bigger problems than worrying about Minnesota," Trump remarked.

Trump has long been at odds with the U.S. intelligence community. During his first term, he rejected intelligence conclusions about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, which he went on to win.
