Participants meticulously calibrated radiation monitoring equipment, swiftly identified workplace hazards, and analyzed chest X-rays under viewing lights to diagnose occupational diseases—the intensity of professional competition was palpable at China’s inaugural National Occupational Health Skills Competition.

Co-organized by the National Health Commission and the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the event, themed "Promoting Craftsmanship Spirit, Building a Healthy China," showcased not only top-tier professional skills but also the robust health safeguards protecting millions of workers.

Over half of the competitors hailed from grassroots roles—clinical doctors, public health physicians, and disease control specialists—united by their shared mission as guardians of occupational health.

On November 12, Hu Chongmin, a frontline disease control expert from Chongqing, demonstrated respiratory dust sampling under strict protocols. "The tasks mirror our daily work," he noted. "With diverse dust types, precise judgment is critical before selecting sampling tools."

Hu, who inspects over 30 enterprises annually for hazard detection, emphasized rigor: "Every test impacts workers' health—there’s no room for error." His words underscored a weighty responsibility: safeguarding occupational health means protecting lives and sustaining high-quality economic growth.

A skilled workforce anchors this mission. China now boasts over 100,000 occupational disease prevention specialists, with professionals like Hu fortifying the nation’s defense line.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, this team achieved milestones: monitoring hazards at 300,000+ workplaces, conducting health checks for 76 million+ workers, and assisting 120,000 SMEs.

"The competition isn’t an endpoint but a springboard for progress," said Li Tao, head judge of the occupational health assessment group. "We aim to foster skill exchange and growth through this platform."

China’s occupational health "safety net" continues strengthening: 660+ technical standards enacted, an updated Occupational Disease Classification covering 135 conditions across 12 categories, and 20 million+ annual worker health screenings shifting focus to prevention.

From the arena to daily practice, each effort advances worker protection. As expertise converges and systems mature, occupational health will shine brighter in China’s health development journey.
