The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has apologized for its editing of Donald Trump's speech on January 6, 2021—which took place shortly before rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol.

The BBC described the editing as an "error of judgment" and stated that the program "will no longer be broadcast in this form on any BBC platform."

A BBC spokesperson said, "The BBC deeply regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited."

However, the spokesperson added, "We firmly disagree that this constitutes legal grounds for a defamation claim."

Trump previously accused the BBC's *Panorama* program of "deceiving the public," as the edited clip made it appear as though he explicitly urged the crowd to attack the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

In an interview with Fox News this week, Trump said, "I feel obligated to take action—I can't let them do this," and threatened to file a $1 billion lawsuit.

Trump's lawyer, Alejandro Brito, demanded in a legal letter that the BBC immediately retract "false, defamatory, derogatory, and inflammatory statements" about Trump.

The letter also stated that if the BBC "does not comply," Trump would have "no choice but to exercise his legal and equitable rights—including filing a lawsuit seeking no less than $1 billion in damages."

However, Trump's legal team clarified today that no formal lawsuit has been filed against the BBC yet.
