Morning Session Sees Chinese and Hong Kong Stocks Dip as Pharma Rallies and Space Tech Declines

On August 11, Chinese A-shares experienced a volatile morning session with all three major indices trending downward. Sectors such as commercial aerospace, space computing, semiconductor equipment, and tungsten hexafluoride saw broad declines. In contrast, pharmaceutical stocks continued their upward momentum, with weight-loss drugs, generic drugs, and CRO services leading gains. The oil and gas, as well as power sectors, also strengthened.

Hong Kong stocks similarly fluctuated and fell, with the Hang Seng Index rising initially before pulling back, while the Hang Seng Tech Index widened its losses in early trading. Tech stocks showed divergence, with Alibaba and Meituan rising 1%, while Tencent and Kuaishou fell over 1%. Chip stocks mostly declined, with Hua Hong Semiconductor and Foxconn Interconnect Technology among the leading losers. In the bond market, government bond futures fell across the board. For commodities, most domestic futures contracts declined, with the container shipping index dropping over 4%.

Key Markets:

A-shares: As of the time of writing, the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.26%, the Shenzhen Component Index dropped 0.27%, and the ChiNext Index declined 0.08%.

Hong Kong Stocks: As of the time of writing, the Hang Seng Index rose 0.37%, and the Hang Seng Tech Index gained 0.17%.

Bond Market: Government bond futures fell across the board. As of the time of writing, the 30-year futures contract dropped 0.09%, the 10-year contract fell 0.03%, the 5-year contract declined 0.03%, and the 2-year contract slipped 0.01%.

Commodities: Most domestic commodity futures declined. As of the time of writing, fuel oil and crude oil rose over 4%, silver futures gained over 3%, palladium and gold rose over 2%, and asphalt, platinum, and iron ore increased over 1%. Coking coal, aluminum, copper, lithium carbonate, industrial silicon, rapeseed, and rubber also moved higher. Meanwhile, soymeal, manganese silicon, glass, rebar, hot-rolled coils, coke, caustic soda, tin, alumina, nickel, and stainless steel fell. Pulp, eggs, and polysilicon dropped over 1%, while the container shipping index plunged over 4%.

The power sector rebounded, with Huaneng Mengdian hitting the daily limit up. Earlier, Zhaoxin Energy also hit the limit up, with Li Xin Energy, Jingneng Power, Baitong Energy, and Huaneng Liaoning following suit.

Precious metals stocks were active, with Hunan Silver hitting the limit up. Xiaocheng Technology, Shandong Gold, Shanjin International, and Zhaojin Gold also rose.

Computing power leasing stocks saw an intraday surge, led by the Alibaba Cloud sector. Hangzhou Iron & Steel and Hongbo Co. hit their daily limit up directly, while Langyuan Technology rose over 10%. Jialitu, Meili Cloud, Tongniu Information, and Data Holdings also followed gains.

The Shanghai Composite Index opened 0.4% lower, while the ChiNext Index fell 0.09%. Satellite internet, commercial aerospace, and space computing concepts led declines, while precious metals and oil and gas sectors strengthened.
